To reiterate this, the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, officially opening the proceedings of the Global Health Summit. The Summit is a fruitful opportunity for the G20 and all invited leaders to share the “lessons” learned in the current pandemic. This is to improve responses to future health crises. Together with the heads of state and government, over 20 participating countries, the heads of international organizations and global health organizations are also present. The work will close with the approval of a 'Rome Declaration'.

Global Health Summit

“The global crisis is not over, we must act quickly - said Prime Minister Mario Draghi - We in Europe are beginning to see the end of this tragedy. But in other countries this is not the case. We must ensure the availability of vaccines to the poorest countries. Probably - he added we will need more vaccination courses in the future. To this end, increasing production is essential. One proposal is to introduce a patent suspension on Covid-19 vaccines. Italy is open to this idea - underlined Draghi - in a targeted way, limited in time and which does not jeopardize the incentive to innovate for pharmaceutical companies.

But this proposal does not guarantee that low-income countries will actually be able to produce their own vaccines. We must support them financially and with specialized skills ”. “Italy is one of the countries hit first and hardest by the pandemic. We have learned our lessons and we want to put them to good use - remarked the prime minister - As the presidency of the G20, we want to lead the global drive to design better responses to current and future health crises. Italy welcomes the European Commission's initiative to produce vaccines and health products in low- and middle-income countries. We want to involve our pharmaceutical companies and our research centers to support production, especially in Africa. And we will do it - concluded Draghi - together with other partner countries, including France and Germany ”.
