On November 4, Italy celebrates the Day of National Unity and the Day of the Armed Forces and pays homage to the Unknown Soldier. The President of the Republic at the Altare della Patria in Rome Sergio Mattarella, lays a laurel wreath at Shrine of the Unknown Soldier. Mattarella is accompanied by the high offices of the state, the Minister of Defense and the military authorities. The ceremony in Piazza Venezia will be preceded by the arrival, at Termini station, of the “Train of Memory". Rome is the last stop on the continuation of the journey of the special convoy which in 1921 carried the body of the unnamed soldier. Body chosen by Maria Bergamas among those of 11 unidentified Italian fallen, from Aquilea to the capital. To welcome the train the Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and the CEO of the State Railways Luigi Ferraris.

Honor to the Unknown Soldier

On November 4, Italy remembers the Armistice of Villa Giusti which allowed the Italians to return to the territories of Trento and Trieste. This is in order to complete the process of national unification begun in the Risorgimento. November 4th ended the First World War. To honor the sacrifices of the soldiers who fell in defense of the Fatherland, on November 4, 1921, the burial of the Unknown Soldier took place in the Sacello dell'Altare della Patria in Rome. With the Royal decree n.1354 of 23 October 1922, the 4 November was declared a national holiday.
