Between archeology and figurative art. Combine tourism and culture. See two exhibits in one visit. Here is a great opportunity to discover Erice, the medieval village overlooking the Gulf of Trapani. Indulge in a real walk in history. This is possible thanks to an event dedicated to the ancient peoples of Sicily and a confrontation between two great exponents of Italian painting. If you are curious, follow the pictorial art, Erice will be a perfect destination to visit. If you like to immerse yourself not only in the beauty of the landscapes, but also in the roots of the places.
The exhibitions to see in Erice
The two exhibitions, scheduled in the city of Erice, will cover the whole summer period. From June 14th to November 3rd. The first exhibition is entitled "The Trojans of Sicily" and investigate the people of the Helims.
The second exhibition is "The Victory of Painting". It is an unprecedented confrontation between the master of metaphysics Giorgio de Chirico and the master of abstract realism Luciano Ventrone, a style that earned him, by the art historian Federico Zeri, the definition of "Caravaggio of the twentieth century". The exhibition, curated by the critic Vittorio Sgarbi and Victoria Noel-Johnson, was born from an idea of Giordano Bruno Guerri, Lorenzo Zichichi and Sgarbi himself. The exhibition is organized by a synergy between the Erice Arte Foundation of the Municipality of Erice, the Ettore Majorana Foundation and the Giorgio and Isa de Chirico Foundation.
Who were the Elìmi, ancient people
Being in Erice for two exhibitions, between archeology and figurative art, is also an opportunity to deepen some details on its history. The Trojans of Sicily exhibition is organized by the Segesta Archaeological Park in collaboration with the Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS) of Pisa and the Ettore Majorana Foundation. The subtitle is explanatory: “At the origins of Sicily, the land and cities of the Elìmi”. According to Thucydides and Virgil, the Elìmi were refugees who had escaped the epic Trojan war. It is they who founded Erice itself, the ancient Erix and the neighboring one Segesta. But they also owe the cities of Entella (a city in the nearby hinterland Palermo) and Iaitias, which would correspond more or less to the current Saint Joseph Iato.
The inauguration of the exhibitions
The Regional Councilor for Cultural Heritage Alberto Samonà will participate in the inauguration of the two exhibitions. It starts on June 14 at 19 pm, at the Wigner San Francesco institute. Rossella Giglio (Director of the Segesta Archaeological Park), Lorenzo Zichichi (Majorana Foundation) and Anna Magnetto, professor of Greek History and director of the Saet Laboratory of the SNS, will participate in the Troiani di Sicilia exhibition.
The mayor of Erice, Daniela Toscano Pecorella, Giordano Bruno Guerri (superintendent of the Erice Arte Foundation) and the curators will intervene for the exhibition Victory of Painting, set up in the spaces of the Wigner Institute and the “Antonino Cordici” Museum Complex.
