Having arrived in Italy a few years ago, Grandparents' Day actually originated several decades ago in the United States. Grandparents' Day, in fact, was born in the United States in a 1978 from there it spread throughout the world. The proposal started from a housewife, Marian McQuade, resident in West Virginia with his 15 children e 40 grandchildren. It was she who spoke about the idea to the president at the time, Jimmy Carter.

The date is fixed and – in Italy – it was established by the Parliament on July 31th, 2005 through law number 159, promulgated by the then President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

The festival was born for "celebrate the importance and role played by grandparents within families and society“. And, as provided for by the statute, even local authorities such as regions, provinces and municipalities, on the occasion of Grandparents' Day, can promote initiatives to enhance the role of grandparents.
