Having arrived in Italy a few years ago, Grandparents' Day actually originated several decades ago in the United States. Grandparents' Day, in fact, was born in the United States in a 1978 from there it spread throughout the world. The proposal started from a housewife, Marian McQuade, resident in West Virginia with his 15 children e 40 grandchildren. It was she who spoke about the idea to the president at the time, Jimmy Carter.

The date is fixed and – in Italy – it was established by the Parliament on July 31th, 2005 through law number 159, promulgated by the then President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
