In Malta, on November 10, the Falcone Foundation headquarters was inaugurated. A historic moment that saw Italy and Malta united in memory and commitment to justice and the fight against the mafia. The evening, which brought together prominent Italian and Maltese figures, marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Foundation. Founded in Palermo to honor the memory of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the two magistrates who were symbols of the fight against the mafia in Italy, the Falcone Foundation is engaged in an awareness project that looks beyond national borders.
A moving and emotional inauguration
The event began with moving images projected in the square. The faces of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, assassinated by Cosa Nostra, along with that of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, killed for investigating corruption in Malta. The images reminded those present of the importance of the fight for truth and justice. The evening was opened with a speech by notary Robert Aquilina, who represents the Falcone Foundation in Malta.
The presence of the President of Malta, Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, at the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Falcone Foundation was a strong and significant signal. Her participation underlined the concrete commitment of the Maltese institutions to support the fight against organised crime and to promote social justice. The support of the highest office of the State represents a message of closeness and collaboration between Malta and Italy in a common path towards legality. The choice of Malta is not accidental. In recent years, the country has undergone a profound internal reflection on transparency and justice, with the killing of Daphne Caruana Galizia which has deeply shocked the international community. Notary Robert Aquilina, representative of the Foundation in Malta, underlined how this headquarters can be a symbol of hope and rebirth for a country in which the battle against corruption and crime is still open.
One of the most solemn moments of the evening was the unveiling of the Foundation's plaque, placed in the centre of Siġġiewi, and blessed by the Archbishop of Malta, Monsignor Charles Jude Scicluna. The blessing sealed a symbolic pact of commitment between Italy and Malta, invoking protection for those who are committed to the fight for justice. The evening, steeped in memory and hope, recalled that the fight against the mafia is not only an Italian battle, but a global mission.
