One of the most intriguing attractions of Expo 2020 in Dubai is undoubtedly the Italy Pavilion. To admire it it is necessary go to the Opportunity and Sustainability districts. An international showcase of crucial importance, in order to be able to address crucial issues such as sustainability, climate change and the necessary technological developments relating to these topics and more.
THEExhibition will open its doors1 October 2021. Nicola Lener, Italian ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, explained what the underlying theme is: “Beauty unites people. This not only encompasses what is aesthetically beautiful, but also what is right, useful, inclusive and sustainable ".
Expo 2020, the Italian Pavilion
Italy is the most refined pavilion among those present at Expo 2020. Located in a strategic position, as regards the flow of visitors. The estimate is approx 5 million people waits throughout the entire event, lasting six months.
The blue project saw the involvement of 70 institutional partners. To this are added 50 sponsor companies, 15 Regions and 30 Universities. The area is spread over an area of 3.500 square meters, 27 meters high. All characterized by a cover made up of three inverted hulls, in green, white and red colors.
Everything was shaded in a sustainable way, using fireproof ropes and curtains made of recycled plastic. The ventilation is natural and in the center there is space for a 3D copy of Michelangelo's David. There are many issues to address, from the great challenges of humanity to the climate, from space to intercultural dialogue, up to digitalisation in health, agriculture and the blue economy. They all are objectives of the UN 2030 Agency.
What to expect from a visit
Anyone who will have the chance to go to Dubai for Expo 2020 will find themselves discovering the micro world created inside the Italian Pavilion. At the entrance there are various installations created by great Italian excellences. Just think of Eni's cascade of “technological lianas”, which presents a microalgae culture with a photobioreactor. Space for the Smart Tower "Venezia" by Inwit, which aims to promote the integration of digital connection systems in a Smart City.
The route continues on a suspended walkway, coated with paints and resins. This allows the discovery of Simone Lingua's Bvlgari installation. In the initial part is the PHM (Passive Hydrogen Maser), an atomic clock by Leonardo, used to ensure absolute precision in certain activities such as satellite navigation.
The itinerary also includes the Belvedere designed by the scenographer Alessandro Camera. A circular structure characterized by "blades of water", which evokes the gardens of the Renaissance. Here the Tolo Green spirulina is grown, which allows the ecological treatment of the air through the biofixation of carbon dioxide produced by visitors. The roof is a lowered dome, where various herbs of the Mediterranean Macchia are grown. The whole recalls the dome of the Pantheon and in the central oculus there is a circular screen. This proposes the Skies of Italy, or images taken from the masterpieces of our local art.
There is also a large led panel at the exit. This proposes the “Italian know-how”, narrated by Gabriele Salvatores. On the back there is a space dedicated to "short stories", or temporary exhibitions.
Other installations
As mentioned, innovation has great importance in the Italian Pavilion. Inside the Innovation Space there is the "Second Sun". It is an installation designed by Enel X, which experiments with the most advanced technologies related to “Smart Lighting”. Systems that contribute to photosynthesis thanks to the light frequencies generated, favoring the development of plants in the vegetable garden.
Outside of the latter there is the experience created by Luiss and Intesa San Paolo. Using a sophisticated wireless wand, it allows visitors to conduct an orchestra. 90% of the materials used for Expo will be reused. In fact, sustainability is the crucial theme of this edition. Permanent buildings will be built thanks to what is recycled. The site also aims to be energetically self-contained with low environmental impact, with renewable energy systems installed on all permanent construction projects.
