Champion Italian Espresso, among the finalists of this 12th edition in 2024 there is also the 33-year-old from Ogliastra Martina Depau. The international espresso and cappuccino championship, which sees the best baristas compete every year, reaches its final phase. The young bartender of tertenia triumphed among the eleven participants, in the regional selection last April 17th in Monastir, in the headquarters of Tasteful which organized and hosted the second of the eight finalist selection stages.
Espresso Italiano Champion, emotion and satisfaction for Martina
So much emotion and satisfaction, therefore, for Martina, owner of the Dardani Cafè in Tertenia, who took over the family business from a young age. «It is certainly a passion of mine. It's a shame, however, that I wasn't able to have an experience abroad in the past to learn a language well. Now, however, there is my son who ties me here."
Espresso Italiano Champion, an important milestone for Martina
The flag of Sardinia is ready to fly in the final phase of the Espresso Italiano Champion, scheduled from 18 al 19 June 2024 in Lipomo, at the Caffè Milani headquarters. A competition open to all, with an itinerant selection mechanism around Italy and two stages in Asia, between Korea and Japan, to reach the national and international semi-finals and finals. «I was somewhat expecting this achievement. It's not the first time I've taken part in these races and I've always achieved good placings. And now the final has arrived."
Espresso Italiano Champion, what you need for a good coffee
For several years, the Espresso Italiano champion has been the competition for baristas who wish to test themselves with coffee and cappuccino, the symbol of the Italian coffee shop. Hundreds of professionals involved, coming from everywhere. «What is needed for a good coffee? Raw materials and quality product, without a doubt. Then, certainly the technique and courtesy. Without forgetting cleaning. This is a job that requires training", explains Martina. An achievement that the young bartender from Ogliastra does not hesitate to dedicate to Franco Melis, one of the historic administrators of Altogusto, but above all a friend. «He was the one who pushed me and mentored me. He saw this passion in me and made it grow. Unfortunately he passed away when we least expected it and I dedicate it to him."
Sardinian female pride
As also underlined by the president of Altogusto Spa, Pier Carlo Bisio, since the first edition women have always stood out in the Espresso Italiano Champion, already won by a young girl, Alessandra, from Porto Torres. Others followed her. This year it is Martina's turn, who must keep the flag of the Quattro Mori high, until next June. "It intimidates me a little, yes, but it is also a reason for comparison with others and for growth."
