Election of the President of the Republic, the first call ends with a stalemate and hundreds of blank ballots. No agreement, therefore, between the various party groups that have not yet found the square on a shared name. The voting operations took place during the joint session of the two branches of Parliament, coordinated by Roberto Fico e Elisabetta Casellati, respectively Presidents of the Chamber and Senate. The election in time of a pandemic also led to new rules on voting methods for large Covid-positive voters.
Election of the President of the Republic
The first call started in the early afternoon of today and went on until recently. After the big voters who asked to be able to anticipate the vote due to justified health reasons, the senators were called for life. Elena Cattaneo, Mario Monti, Liliana Segre and Renzo Piano. Absent, however, Carlo Rubbia and Giorgio Napolitano. After a short pause, the deputies then voted.
Throughout the afternoon the name that circulated with great insistence was that of Prime Minister Mario Draghi that, if he were elected head of state, he would have to leave the presidency of the council. In truth, after hours of summits and negotiations for the choice of the next President of the Republic, this morning the party leaders still did not have the name of the candidate on which to converge. The representatives of the parties met to define the strategy to be adopted during these first votes, a strategy that was resolved in the tactics of the white ballot. Voting continues tomorrow.
