Today, April 13, 2025, Palm Sunday is celebrated in the Christian religion. It is one of the most important celebrations in the Christian world.

Why “Palm Sunday?”

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week and commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when he was greeted by crowds with palm branches and cloaks spread out on the street.

This episode, recounted in all four Gospels, represents a central moment in the narration of the Passion of Christ. The liturgy includes the blessing of the branches, a procession that recalls the event and the use of the color red, symbol of royalty and of the blood of the Passion. The name of the celebration derives from the palm branches, which in the ancient Middle East symbolized victory, peace and royalty.

The origins

The origins of the celebration date back to the 4th century in Jerusalem, as described in the diary of the pilgrim Egeria. Since then, the tradition has spread throughout the Christian world, keeping alive the memory of that solemn entrance. According to popular belief, the blessed branches would also have the power to protect the house from storms and misfortunes, giving the holiday a meaning that unites spirituality and daily life.
