La Langhe of Barbaresco it is a very particular site among the Piedmont hills which offers particular and evocative features panoramic villages.
The Langhe of Barbaresco
Of the Langhe he spoke to us and made us understand the atavistic, popular, traditional and evocative nature Cesare Pavese in the pages of his novels, but also a refuge for partisans of the Resistance as he tells Beppe Fenoglio. Langa, from Latin linguae, literally indicates the strip of land characterized by the hills located in the lowest part of Piedmont, between the provinces of Cuneo and Asti. They are divided into low Langa, high Langa and Langa Astigiana.
From 22 June 2014 they can boast of being part of the UNESCO heritage Humanity.
The ones we talk about in this article are the Langhe Moscato hills, near the Tanaro river. This area is the Barbaresco area, located south-east of the city of Alba.
The area is small and includes three towns (Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso) and the hamlet of San Rocco Seno d'Elvio in the municipality of Alba. The area is full of vineyards of quality and white truffles, grazing areas with which cheeses are produced and presents a panorama with hills covered in vineyards, woods, locations that recall fairytale settings.
An area rich in history, culture and typical products to be tasted, one of the best stops in the food and wine tourism Italian.
The village of Barbaresco
The village was born in medieval times and is inhabited today by around seven hundred people, characterized by a main street dotted with wine bars, taverns and shops. Symbols of the village are the castle, destroyed and the Visconti tower erected to monitor Saracen incursions already in Roman times, which stands in the city and can be visited. It's about the largest medieval tower in Piedmont, 36 meters high and overlooking the river.
The Tower is open every day, except 25 and 26 December, from 10am to 13pm and from 14pm to 19pm. Entrance fee is €5.
The village became an object of contention for centuries by the municipalities of Alba and Asti. The village was rightfully included in the list of most beautiful villages in Italy.
Today one of the most important visual references in the entire Langhe area: wine tasting events and activities are often organised. Barbaresco DOCG wine, one of the best red wines in Italy.
A little gem worth knowing even for those who love trekking and fully enjoying nature.
