Every 29th of the month, in Argentina, Uruguay and in some areas of Brazil, it is tradition to gather at the table to eat a dish of gnocchi. This custom, known as Día de Ñoquis, is much more than a simple gastronomic event: it is a popular tradition with roots in Italian emigration and a strong symbolic value linked to luck and sharing.
The Birth of Día de Ñoquis, Where Gnocchi Are a Celebration
Día de Ñoquis has its origins in the 19th century, when the first waves of Italian immigrants arrived in South America. Many of them, coming mainly from Northern Italy, where potato gnocchi were already a typical dish, brought with them this simple and nutritious recipe, perfect for feeding large families with just a few ingredients: potatoes, flour, salt and eggs.
According to the most widespread legend, the seeds eating gnocchi on the 29th of the month was born because, at the end of the month, money began to run low and gnocchi were a cheap but substantial dish, capable of bringing the family together around the table. Another version links the custom to an ancient Christian legend of a young doctor and saint, Saint Pantaleone, who in the XNUMXth century AD wandered around Northern Italy blessing families and receiving a plate of gnocchi in exchange. After his visit, the diners found money under the plate, a symbol of good luck.
Tradition also present in restaurants
On the 29th of every month, restaurants, trattorias and families prepare gnocchi in all its variations: from the classic tomato sauce, to ragù, to the more modern versions with cheese or pesto sauces. More than just a meal, it has become a time for friends and family to gather, an excuse to sit down together and honor their Italian roots. In some cities, like Buenos Aires or Montevideo, there are even restaurants that on the 29th offer special menus dedicated to gnocchi, keeping alive a tradition that is now part of the local culture.
This event also demonstrates how the Italians have changed the society of other countries during emigration from the Bel Paese. The gnocchi dish in this case is the symbol of a popular cuisine that unites, makes you feel at home and recalls the roots of an entire people, even thousands of kilometers from Italy.
