A huge fire broke out last night, around 21, on theElba islandspreading quickly due to the wind. The flames burned about 14 hectares of woodland and at least three houses. Over 700 people evacuated during the night after the order issued by the mayor, signed by the deputy mayor Sara Carracci, for the protection of public safety. Vallata di Ortano, Mezzo Ortano, San Felo, Chiusello and Campo Grande are the localities involved. This morning the situation is under control, even if the flames have not yet been extinguished.
The facts
It was around 21.00 yesterday evening when the fire broke out in Chiusello, under the Sp26 state road in the municipality of Rio. The flames immediately engulfed the surrounding vegetation fueled by the strong wind. As a precaution, the Village Canapai campsite, near Ortano, a tourist residence and some houses in San Felo were immediately evacuated. Later it was the turn of the inhabitants of Chiusello and Campo Grande. Many people have been welcomed into the schools in Rio dell'Elba which have been opened especially for the displaced. There is so much fear of residents in the areas affected by the fire.
The shutdown operations continue
The fire was immediately reported to the regional operations room. The flames, clearly visible, immediately spread into the vegetation, affecting a large area. A house, threatened by tongues of fire, was reached and manned by firefighters. 12 volunteer forest firefighting teams and forestry workers arrived on the spot. Another 14 teams of CVT volunteers with equipped vehicles, an AIB analyst and a mobile coordination post arrived this morning by ferry. The wind and darkness of this night prevented the canadairs from flying, making firefighting operations more difficult. This morning, on the other hand, three helicopters from the Tuscany region are operating on the places affected by the fire, together with two Canadairs.
