In the next few days, a cyclone in Iceland will trigger a series of disturbances that will hit Italy with intense storms. Cyclone Iceland is a semi-permanent gyre in the North Atlantic that influences much of Europe's autumn disturbances.
Icelandic cyclone, here's what's happening
The bad weather begins immediately, with the disturbed front that will hit Northern Italy, intensifying until the evening. Precipitation will move from west to east, bringing intense rain and local thunderstorms in Liguria, the Alps, the Prealps, Lombardy and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. In the afternoon and evening, bad weather will extend to the Tyrrhenian regions, including Tuscany, Lazio, Sardinia and Umbria.
The cyclone will also bring intense winds of Libeccio on the Ligurian Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea and Sardinia, and Scirocco in the upper Adriatic, causing storm surges along the exposed coasts and an increase in wave motion in the Ligurian Gulf.
On Wednesday, the disturbance will move eastward, continuing to hit Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio with irregular rainfall. These rains will reach Southern Italy, while in the North Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Dolomites will be affected.
On Thursday, a second disturbance will reach the Alps and Pre-Alps, descending to the Po Valley. Bad weather will hit northern Tuscany again with heavy showersthe. This second front will be accompanied by strong Libeccio winds. However, on Friday the Centre-North will see an improvement in weather conditions, while in the South the rains will continue in Campania and the Cosenza area.
In summary, from today to the weekend, Italy will face two disturbances, with the first being the most intense. Both fronts will be characterized by south-westerly winds with gusts up to 70-80 km/h and storm surges on exposed coasts. The Ligurian Sea will be rough, while the other sea basins will present rough to very rough conditions.
