Who says you can't do something good and useful for society by staying at home? Well, first of all, social distancing prevents and controls the spread of the virus. But there are also those who continue to work normally at home, thanks to the means that technology offers us. And there is who, using the most advanced technologies, he is able to create devices that can save lives. And we have met, so to speak, a boy who is part of the so-called makers or, to put it in our language, digital craftsmen.
These young technology enthusiasts, from home, have made themselves available to make their contribution against this emergency. Let's exchange a few words, then, with Pasquale Pizzini who gives Caserta, together with two collaborators "print" adapters that transform simple snorkeling masks into lung respirators.
Tell us how and when your journey into the world of 3D began
It all started in 2016, when Renato Manco and Angelo Ianniello, out of curiosity, decided to buy their first 3D printer as an assembly kit. It was not easy: at the time there were few printers on the market, but above all few people who knew this tech so thoroughly. I joined the group 3D Makers Caserta subsequently, and together with Angelo and Renato, we consolidated the foundations of the business. In the world of 3D, the only limit is your imagination! 3D printing technology nowadays is able to respond to the different needs of the market. From the creation of a mechanical spare part, to the printing of objects for personal use.
The news is a few days ago that simple masks can become lung respirators, for which there is much demand. What is the role of the Makers in all of this?
The Brescia-based startup Isinnova has designed and patented an adapter that allows Masks from snorkeling to be used as lung respirators. The same have attracted the whole international Makers community in order to be able to contribute with the printing of these adapters. And we have decided to answer the call. Our machines take around 6 hours to produce a pair. We have sent the first 10 kits to Brescia and we are awaiting directives.
Our idea is to print other kits if there is a need to collaborate with the health facilities of Caserta. We are ready to help as many people as possible, offering our means and our skills in this sector, offering ourselves as an additional resource to the heroes who are doing the impossible in hospitals, risking their health. In short, we try to do our part in this tragic situation.
How do you feel about producing something that in this moment of health emergency goes, literally, to save lives?
We are certainly not the heroes, but the doctors, nurses and all the health personnel who today are making a huge effort to help those in need. We are the Lucius fox by Batman o agent Q of James Bond offering new technologies to defeat the enemy COVID-19. The biggest thanks goes to the company Isinnova and FabLab Brescia who designed and tested the adapter that we, like many other colleagues, are printing for the entire Italian community.
A further demonstration of how, in times of emergency and need, we all feel part of one big family. All in the same boat!
