Serie C, the third tier of Italian professional football, is preparing to introduce Football Video Support (FVS) for the first time, also known as On call.
As reported a short while ago by Sky Sports, this new referee support technology will make its debut in the season that is now upon us, in the match Livorno-Ternana, valid for the first day of the championship, scheduled for Friday 22 August at 21pm.
On-call VAR: How it works
The FVS was born as an intermediate solution between the total absence of technological tools and the complete use of the VAR, as occurs in Serie A and B. The regulation provides two “challenge” opportunities for each team.
In case of error, the two calls are kept
If the review confirms an error by the referee, the team will keep the original number of calls.
Conversely, if the referee's decision is upheld, the team will lose one of its chances to intervene. The activation of the system will be up to the coach, who will have to signal the request to the fourth official using a tablet. The latter will then call the referee, inviting him to review the action on the monitor. In short, a major innovation in Serie C.
