Il Made in Italy: recorded an important victory. Seven years after the collective trademark was filed, China has recognized the Prosecco. And he also recognized the Consortium of Doc led by Stefano Zanette.

How China recognized Prosecco

In 2014, to guarantee the protection of the denomination, the Consorzio della Doc filed the Prosecco brand in China. This decision was initially opposed by the Australian wine producers represented by Australian Grape and Wine Importated. The association, in fact, tried to obstruct the protection of IG Prosecco to prevent the registration of the trademark. However, China sided with Italy. The Chinese Trademark Office rejected Australia's opposition on the following grounds: "Prosecco, being a geographical indication, it is suitable to perform the function of a trademark to distinguish the origin of the products".

Luca Ferrari, Ambassador of Italy to the People's Republic of China, wrote a letter to the president of the Consortium. And he expressed his "personal congratulations for the successful conclusion of the procedure. This decision represents a step forward in the defense of the Prosecco appellation in China". The result is due to the synergy between the Italian Embassy in Beijing, the Italian institutions on the national territory and the Consortium. After all, Prosecco in China is increasingly famous and appreciated. If in the first 9 months of 2019 926.000 bottles were sold, in the same months of 2021 the bottles sold were 1.353.000. Chinese citizens, attentive to Italian wine and especially to bubbles, particularly appreciate the rose. And the Consortium believes so much in China's potential that it has opened one Prosecco house in the ancient capital Xi'An.
