medieval village

Cervara di Roma, which has ancient origins dating back to Roman times, has maintained its medieval village charm over the centuries. The narrow cobbled streets, ancient stone structures and historic churches tell of a rich and vibrant past. The Church of St. John the Baptist, with its frescoes and slender bell tower, is one of the most significant places of worship in the country. The castle, which dominates the landscape, represents a testimony to the war history of the area.

Artists' Refuge

In recent decades, Cervara di Roma has gained notoriety as the “artists' village”. This recognition is the result of a growing interest on the part of painters, sculptors and visual artists who have chosen to settle here to draw inspiration from the unique atmosphere of the area. The surrounding natural environment, with its forests, mountains and clear skies, is a powerful attraction for those seeking a stimulating context for their creativity. Among its fascinating hills and breathtaking landscapes, stands an exceptional work of art: the “Cervara’s Sculpted Mountain”. This extraordinary artistic project, which unites nature and human creativity, has become a symbol of rebirth and valorization of the territory.

The Sculpted Mountain

The idea of sculpting the mountain was born from a desire to revitalize the small town of Cervara di Roma. In the 80s, a professor from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, with his students and the inhabitants, began to sculpt figures and faces in the limestone rock. The Sculpted Mountain is not only a work of art, but is also an ideal place for nature lovers and hikers. Well-marked trails lead visitors through woods and breathtaking views, until they reach panoramic points where they can admire the works up close. The sculpting work required years of dedication and passion. The artists used excavation and carving techniques, while respecting the natural conformation of the rock.

Each sculpture tells a story and takes the visitor back to a time when nature and art were in harmony. During the walks, it is also possible to discover the local flora and fauna, which contribute to making the experience even more immersive. The most tangible symbol of how much art has marked this little gem of a town, are the “Artists' Staircase” , “Stairway of Peace”. The first is a set of sculptures and paintings that accompany the visitor towards the heart of the village. The second is the connecting point that from the town centre goes up to the remains of the castle and is a path between artistic representations whose main theme is solidarity between peoples.
