The first phase of the State cashback. An experimental phase, which will bring a maximum reimbursement of 150 euros to the current account of those who have exploited it. L'Extra Cashback for Christmas, as it has been renamed, wanted to encourage payments with ATMs and credit cards in physical stores. Anyone who has used it will be credited with the next February 10% of the amount spent (up to 150 €, for at least 10 transactions and with a maximum reimbursement of 15 euros per single expense). But what will happen to the State Cashback in January?

“Italia Cashless”, an 18-month long plan

The Christmas Cashback was part of "Italy Cashless“, A detailed plan that intends to increase the digitization of the country and the use of credit cards, while decreasing tax evasion. The plan, which officially entered into force on January 1, 2021, will end on 30 June 2022 and it will be in three phases: from 1 January to 30 June 2021, from 1 July to 31 December 2021, from 1 January to 30 June 2022.

Each of the phases will allow you to obtain a refund of 10% on the expenses incurred, for a maximum of 150 euros per semester, but the transactions will have to be minimal 50 (always in physical stores). It is not necessary to sign up for the State Cashback for those who joined the initiative last December. Those who use the IO app, in the Portfolio section, will be able to automatically view the data sheet relating to the first half of 2021 (and therefore to the first phase). Among the novelties also the possibility of pay with smartphone, through apps such as Google Pay and Apple Pay.

Super Cashback and receipt lottery

For the entire period of "Italia Cashless" the "Super Cashback" 1.500 euros per semester for the 100.000 people who will carry out the largest number of transactions (regardless of the amounts). The IO app will provide real-time indication of your location. The will also return receipt lottery, probably starting from February 2021 and with prizes of up to 5.000 euros. To join, you need to connect to the initiative website (www.lotteriadegliscontrini.gov) and enter your tax code by clicking on "Join now". You will then receive a lottery code to show every time you make a purchase: every euro spent "gives" a virtual ticket, with up to 1.000 tickets per transaction.

Which expenses are valid

The State Cashback is valid only for expenses made in physical stores, and not for online shopping. However, it is not just a shopping tool: the payment of fuel for your car, insurance and car tax also count towards the reimbursement. In detail, purchases of:

  • foodstuffs
  • drugs
  • medical expenses
  • clothing
  • craftsmen and professionals (electricians, plumbers, tire specialists, mechanics, etc.)
  • appliances
  • Consumer electronics
  • bar
  • restaurants
  • hairdresser and beautician
  • bills (provided that they are paid in person at the counter, or in a tobacconist's / betting shop)

Expenses for carrying out one's professional activity are excluded, and recurring payments with credit card charges and transactions carried out at the ATM are not included among the transactions allowed for cashback.
