Carlo Mazzone has died. The former Roman coach, affectionately appealed Sister Carletto, passed away in Ascoli Piceno at the age of 86, due to an illness he had been battling for some time. Much loved by fans and great champions, he leaves a great void in the world of football. Coach of Ascoli and many other teams, such as Rome, Cagliari, Naples, Brescia, Livorno, he held the bench record in the history of Italian football, with 1.278 official appearances. Of these, 792 in Serie A, 797 if we consider the five play-offs.
A minute of recollection to remember it
To remember Carlo Mazzone, the Figs ordered a minute's silence on all pitches before the start of matches in all competitions scheduled for the weekend, including Monday's postponements. Veteran coaches, he was an adoptive 'father' for many players, such as Totti, Pirlo, Guardiola and Baggio.
The latter wrote a message of great affection and gratitude for him, sent to Ansa after his death: “It was fantastic to have you as a coach. It was wonderful to know you were loyal and sincere. The time spent together was too little." Mazzone also received words of esteem from Gabriele Gravina, president of the FIGC. “We salute a true icon of Italian football – he declared -, a man animated by profound values ​​and principles, a prepared, courageous and passionate coach. He invented a unique style embodying seriousness and humanity at the same time. We won't forget it."

Symbol of Italian football, Mazzone played from 1956 to '69, wearing the jerseys of Latina, Rome, Spal, Siena and Ascoli. This was followed by a coaching career that began in Ascoli and continued with Fiorentina, Catanzaro, Bologna, Lecce, Pescara, Cagliari, Rome, Naples, Perugia, Brescia and Livorno. In 2019, the new East grandstand of the "Cino e Lillo Del Duca" stadium in Ascoli Piceno was named after him, and in the same year he was inducted into the Italian football Hall of Fame.
Among the most famous episodes of his career remains the irrepressible race under the curve at the end of the Brescia-Atalanta derby on 30 September 2001. His ability to create a paternal relationship with his players is represented in a documentary film about him, entitled "Like a father", produced by Alessio Di Cosimo. Mazzone leaves behind his wife Maria Pia, his children Sabrina and Massimo and his beloved grandchildren Vanessa, Alessio, Iole and Cristian.
