Part of the Captain Venice the universe of Italian superheroes
"A long time ago, in a distant distant lagoon ...". It could begin like this, paraphrasing the opening credits of Lucas' cinematic masterpiece, Star Wars, the comics linked to the Venetian superhero Captain Venice. "The project was born - says its creator Fabrizio Capigatti - in 2006. But it is in December 2012 with the graphic restyling of the character that we aimed at a superhero product in the style of the giants Marvel and DC."
Starting "for fun", the comics of Captain Venice they get a good response from the public, first in the fairs of Veneto, Friuli and later in Lucca Comics & Games and Etna Comics.
“I wanted stories and characters for a more adult audience. At the beginning I hadn't yet focused on where I wanted to go - says Capigatti. But I knew it was all part of a much bigger project. I wanted to create an entire narrative universe ”.
That is how Captain Venice closes its first season with a 7-issue miniseries plus a crossover where it first appears The she-wolf, superheroine from Rome.
The stories, of pure entertainment, draw on the reality and problems of the cities themselves, embodied in their respective superheroes. “We have so much material to work on in our cities: from history, to art, to popular culture to food and wine. Superheroes like Captain Venice they draw from all this, from our culture. Who wrote all the books released so far. But I also think that the superhero genre was born in response to a historical moment.
If Captain America fought against the Nazis, today, in Italy, we have as many dangerous enemies. Like organized crime and corruption. I have read that Italy accounts for 40% of the entire European corruption, can you think about it? The truth is that many Italians are fed up: my superheroes are the narrative answer to this malaise and in fact among the bad guys there are corrupt mayors, there is talk of reception centers, of Equitalia ... of the things that, unfortunately, we all touch with our hands every day."
Superheroes against the forces of evil
Thus were born new titles and new characters including Captain Palermo whose first story will be released in 2017. This will be realized thanks to the collaboration with the School of Comics in Palermo which has already started for more than a year.
All the publications have narrative cycles enclosed in miniseries retracing the season structure of the television series. But all the characters move in a single Universe, creating transversal plots between the various titles.
“That Universe - underlines Capigatti - that I wanted to create from the beginning. I think we can do the "superhero genre" in Italy. And I believe that something new can be brought to the Italian market. And, in my small way, i Italian captains they can do their part. "
And so, physiologically, the team of collaborators for this self-production expands. From the group of 5 original authors to the current 14, also receiving some free covers from authors such as LRNZ and Alessia De Vincenzi.
Today the project continues to grow and in 2017 there are 5 releases: the season 2 pilot number of Captain Venice, the special entirely drawn and colored by hand Captain Venice vs Captain Padua, the number 1 of 2 of Captain Venezia Black & White, the pilot number of Captain Palermo and the new head BoobsHells which brings together most of the female characters of the entire Universe and whose events are set in Florence.
“To date, concludes Capigatti, there are both in progress Captain Naples and Captain Milan. With the increasingly concrete goal of taking the next step. From self-production to publishing house. "
