The race for the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2028 The competition is entering its decisive phase. The Ministry of Culture has announced the ten finalist cities that will compete for the prestigious national award.
Each year, the Italian Capital of Culture project highlights urban entities and communities that have presented high-profile cultural proposals, engaging citizens, institutions, and visitors through innovative visions and artistic, educational, and social initiatives. The challenge remains open until the winner is announced, expected by March 27, 2026.
The jury appointed by the Ministry selected the most compelling projects from among the applications submitted by over twenty Italian cities. These are the ten finalist cities:
Tarquinia (VT); Anagni (FR) ; Ancona; Catania; Colle di Val d'Elsa (SI); Forlì; Gravina in Puglia (BA); Sponge; Mirabella Eclanum (AV); Sarzana (SP).
The list of finalists reflects Italy's rich cultural and landscape heritage. From provincial cities with historic villages to coastal urban areas, to territories that preserve ancient identities and strong local roots. The ten cities were invited to present their projects. public hearings will take place at the Spadolini Hall of the Ministry of Culture in Rome Thursday, February 26, and Friday, February 27, 2026. Each application will have a maximum of 60 minutes: 30 minutes for presentations and 30 minutes for questions from the jury. The hearings will be open to the public and streamed live on the Ministry of Culture's YouTube channel, ensuring transparency and access to the arguments underlying each project. The winning city will be awarded a contribution of one million euros to carry out the initiatives envisaged in the project.
Expectations, therefore, are focused on the February hearings. A decisive moment to discover what the next one will be. Italian capital of culture and what vision will guide our country's cultural 2028.
