Caorle, overlooking the Adriatic sea and located between the mouths of rivers Livence e Lemene, shows itself in all its 18 km of coastline. The municipality of Venice it is known to the general public first of all as a seaside resort equipped with its golden beaches. It is a historic village on the sea, for this reason tourists are called out even beyond the summer season to indulge in well-deserved relaxation and get to know the local history up close.
History, flavors and colors of Caorle
In the heart of the historic center they stand proud in all their majesty Cylindrical bell tower and the Cathedral of Santo Stefano. The original sacred plexus dating back to 1038 lying on the ruins of a pre-existing early Christian basilica of the seventh century presents clear stylistic features of the Ravenna Byzantine Romanesque. Once you have crossed the entrance, the three naves converge towards the gilded altarpiece that looks up at a suspended crucifix from the 1400s. The whole is surmounted by a wooden trussed ceiling. The same style can be found in the adjacent bell tower. It is here that it presents itself in all its 90 meters in height, ending with a conical cusp visible for kilometers and kilometers.
Being an island, Caorle flaunts a luxuriant natural landscape thanks to the waterways including Old Valley, anatural oasis recognized by the European Union.
Hemingway in Caorle
The Hemingway he stayed here and was so fascinated by it that he outlined its shapes and colors in the writing "Across the river and into the trees"(1950). If you want to take a dip in the past and tread Hemingway's scene or simply enjoy the view that the lagoon offers, you can rent a boat and go in the direction of Isola dei Pescatori. The typical cane huts called Casoni that dominate the scene along the banks testify to the ancient activity of fishermen even during the cooler seasons as well as its economic-cultural importance which still persists today.
During the second half of the XNUMXth century, Caorle it was the scene of an important reclamation that allowed a rapid development of the agricultural sector. In this regard, it is curious to take a look at the historic village of Ca 'Corniani. Built during the 1800s, it evolved thanks to the brilliant intuition of Daniele Franciscans, secretary of the Venetian Generali Insurance but above all a hydraulic engineer. Around 1851 Francesconi had an embankment created by exploiting the particularly fertile debris brought from the nearby Livenza river. He invested his resources on a land plot perfect for growing cereals and vines which contributed to local economic growth.
Caorle and the National Archaeological Museum of the Sea
What was born as a small exhibition of the museum of the sea dedicated to the archeology of Caorle it has expressed itself in its potential by transforming itself into a real one museum. Everything came to life starting from finds from the 90s when four divers of Pordenone found the wreck of an ancient Roman ship (Caprulae ferax) from the XNUMXnd century BC. Subsequently, wine amphorae, two millstones, pottery (such as jugs and cups) and lead anchor stocks were found.
It is shortly after the discovery of the wreck of the French-Italic brig Mercury, military ship of the nineteenth century. The site already opened in 2014 but not yet completed, exhumes pieces of history to narrate the ancient vicissitudes of the territory to locals and tourists. A local icon born to pass on those values linked to the culture and tradition they have brought Caorle to assume its present form.
An indissoluble symbiosis that binds the territory to the sea and that pushes many visitors to discover it in all its declinations between corners of history, flavors and unspoiled landscapes.
