The Italian Council of Ministers recently gave the green light to a new provision aimed at the elderly, introducing the senior bonuses which provides an additional allowance of 850 euros per month for those aged over eighty who are not self-sufficient. This initiative represents a step forward in providing financial support to society's most vulnerable elderly people, guaranteeing them additional financial support to meet daily expenses and care needs.
Seniors bonus of 850 euros
The 850 euro elderly bonus, intended for a limited audience of around 25 thousand people, imposes strict requirements to be able to access it: you must be over 80 years old, present a care need considered "very serious", already be a beneficiary of the accompanying allowance and have a ISEE less than 6 thousand euros.
This careful selection aims to ensure that support is targeted at the most elderly people vulnerable and in need of assistance.

The experimental nature of this program is evident, with the aim of providing targeted help to older people, but with the possibility of extending it over time.
Its effectiveness will be evaluated over the years, and whether it will prove to be a valid support tool for students frail elderly people, could be expanded to include a larger number of beneficiaries.
What to know
The requirements for accessing the elderly bonus are clear and defined, aimed at one specific segment of the population composed of approximately 25.000 individuals, who must meet the following criteria:
- Being over 80.
- Present serious conditions of non-self-sufficiency.
- Already be beneficiaries of the accompanying allowance.
- Have an ISEE of less than 6.000 euros.

As regards the start and duration of the subsidy, INPS will be responsible for carrying out the automatic verification of the beneficiaries' requirements. The bonus will be available from January 2025 until December 2026, with an estimated total cost of approximately 500 million euros. The delivery methods are still being defined and studied.
The assistance allowance, paid by INPS, will have a duration of two years, with the possibility of revocation for those who do not respect the established spending methods. The bonus aims to combat loneliness and social isolation of the elderly by allowing the funds to be used for care workers or care facilities.
