Italy reaches new goals with Blue Flags 2024, resulting in a total of 236 coastal locations awarded, marking a notable increase over the previous year. This prestigious award, now in its 38th edition, represents a symbol of environmental excellence and the quality of marine waters. Awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (Fee), it certifies the commitment of Italian coastal locations in maintaining high standards of sustainability and environmental management.

Blue flags 2024, new records in Italy

This year, the Blue Flag banner will fly high 485 Italian beaches, marking an increase of 27 compared to 2023 and representing approximately 11,5% of the beaches awarded globally. Italian lakes also saw an increase, with 23 blue flags awarded, including two new entries.

La Liguria confirms itself at the top of the regional ranking with 34 awarded locations, despite the loss of two flags and the entry of two new ones.

Puglia marks significant progress going up to 24 flags thanks to three new municipalities awarded, while Campania and Calabria are tied with 20 flags each, both with one more recognition than the previous year.

Among the 14 new inputs include Ortona (Abruzzo), Parghelia (Calabria), Cellole (Campania), Borgio Verezzi and Recco (Liguria), Porto Sant'Elpidio (Marche), Lecce, Manduria and Patù (Puglia), Letojanni, Scicli and Taormina (Sicily) , Tenno and Vallelaghi (Trentino Alto Adige). Four municipalities were not reconfirmed: Ameglia and Taggia (Liguria), Margherita di Savoia (Puglia) and Marciana Marina (Tuscany).

Evaluation criteria, tourism and sustainability

Each Blue Flag represents a continuous commitment to training, the involvement of local communities and promotion of sustainable tourism.

The awarded locations and marinas were evaluated on the basis of 32 rigorous criteria blue flag program. The evaluation commission saw the participation of numerous institutional and private bodies, including various ministries, universities and unions in the seaside sector.
