Assisi crib city, for the Christmas holidays the city of Saint Francis offers a rich calendar that combines tradition and innovation, favoring eco-sustainability. A religious, spiritual, typically Franciscan journey. A journey to the places of the 'Poor thing' also visible from the valley that comes out of the city walls and extends to Porziuncola Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli and Sacred Hovel of Rivotorto. The organization of the Christmas program saw the fruitful collaboration with the local associations, in particular with the Pro Loco and the organizers of the living nativity scenes.
Assisi city crib
The city is transformed into a huge open-air nativity scene, through light installations and video mappings that project Giotto's frescoes, linked to the theme of the nativity. Magnificent and immortal works that take shape on the facades of the churches and the main monuments of the city. All made with LED technology, with low energy consumption and practically zero environmental impact. “Assisi crib city” offers visitors traditional living, monumental and artistic nativity scenes in the villages and in the most characteristic places in the centre. This strengthens the 'ideal bridge' with Greccio, where San Francesco in 1223 created the first Nativity in history.
In this regard, a great event will be held for the celebrations of the eighth centenary of the death of St. Francis. For the occasion, on December 23rd, in the square in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, a large living nativity scene will be represented, curated by associations and artisans from Assisi and Greccio. The sacred representation will be repeated on 3 January 2023 on the lower square of San Francesco,
The tree and the crib
The Christmas tree in the lower square of the Basilica of San Francesco is a fourteen-metre white fir that comes from the forests of the Municipality of Romeno, in Trentino. The nativity scene, in pine wood from the Val di Non woods, was sculpted by the Trentino artist Livio Recla. The hut built by some voluntary citizens is inspired by the ancient mountain huts of Trentino and shows a large snowflake in the centre, a symbol of water and budding life. The Franciscan Christmas in Assisi begins today, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and will end on 8 January next.
