Another Italian record was obtained with the removal of a brain tumor in Cremona through the use of two innovative surgical techniques. The director of the hospital's Neurosurgery team, Antonio Fioravanti, underlines that this methodology will allow the treatment of up to 120 tumors per year.

Innovative techniques for brain tumor removal in Cremona

During the operation, a 50-year-old patient resident in the metropolitan city of Milan underwentremoval of a tumor mass through the combination of transulcal surgery and surgery with the patient awake.

This method, performed for the first time in Europe, involves waking the patient during the operation to evaluate brain functions, thus reducing risks and best preserving the sensitive areas of the brain.

The operation was carried out by the team led by Antonio Fioravanti and Carmine Donofrio, with the support of the anesthetist Elena Grappa and the neuropsychologist Sara Subacchi, in addition to the nurses coordinated by Carla Garello e Giuseppina Geroldi.

After six days of hospitalization, the patient was able to return home, praising the work of the specialists.

A step forward in neurosurgery

The combination of transulcal and awake techniques represents a notable step forward in neurosurgery. These techniques allow for more effective treatment and much faster postoperative recovery.

The transulcal technique, among other things, allows the lesion to be reached in an absolutely precise and targeted manner. The surgery, again, is carried out later three-dimensional mapping in such a way as to be as least invasive as possible.

For the awake technique the patient is informed of all processes. Directions are given to follow once you wake up. This approach allows you to verify any deficits and in combination drastically reduces recovery times.

This approach, applicable to deep, hard-to-reach lesions, represents a new standard of care in the removal of brain tumors, paving the way for safer and more efficient treatment for many patients.
