For the first time
Next May the Sicilian coasts will see the passage of Andrea Barbera and his multihull. The challenge of the Agrigento sailor foresees the circumnavigation of Sicily aboard a boat without an engine. An undertaking that, barring unforeseen circumstances, will make Andrea enter the history of sailing as the first man to have circumnavigated Sicily alone.
Andrea and his Sicily
Thirty-eight years old, originally from Agrigento and raised on bread and navigation. Andrea Barbera has the sea in his blood and from an early age he cultivated a passion for sailing. This is thanks to a father who infected him with his love for navigation from an early age. And now, after many trips around the Mediterranean, he is ready for his personal challenge along the Sicilian coast.
But that of Sicily is not a casual choice. Andrea is in fact very attached to that land and to that sea that has seen him grow. That sea which has always been a crossroads of peoples and cultures. From the ancient Greeks to the allied troops, up to the passage of barges loaded with human beings fleeing war and hunger. The Mediterranean has been a crucial sea for millennia and Sicily is one of its liveliest ports.
Crowdfunding
Like many businesses carried out without rich supporters, Andrea's also makes use of crowdfunding. The program that provides for fundraising through donations from those who believe in a specific project. And once the minimum amount is reached (hopefully by April), Andrea will be able to buy the necessary equipment and set sail. An undertaking that will make the Agrigento the first navigator to have circumnavigated Sicily alone, with the only help of winds and currents. Without stopping, all in one go, armed only with his passion and some ultra-energetic snacks. And with its land always within reach, just to never feel alone.
