On February 22, 1931, the ship was launched in Castellammare di Stabia which subsequently became the symbol andpride of the Italian Navy, the Amerigo Vespucci.
The Vespucci was designed in 1930 byEng. Francesco Rotundi, Director of Royal Shipyard of Castellammare di Stabia and launched to replace the previous training ship, the Flavio Gioia, decommissioned in 1928 and used as a kindergarten for the orphans of sailors. February 22 is a symbolic date as Amerigo Vespucci died in 1512, the Florentine navigator who arrived on the coasts of South America giving his name to the "New World". Since its entry into service aboard the Amerigo Vespucci the training campaign of the students has taken place annually, stopping only four times: in 1940 due to the war and in 1964, 1993 and 1997 for extraordinary and modernization works.
