Amazon has unveiled an ambitious plan for 2024 regarding delivery with drones of parcels, a service known as Amazon Prime Air. This innovative initiative, which will involve both Italy and the United Kingdom, promises to revolutionize delivery logistics.

Drone delivery with Prime Air

Initially announced in 2013 under the name of Prime air, the project involved using six-propeller drones to deliver packages directly to customers. After a decade of announcements, changes in strategy and modifications to the drones themselves, it seems that the goal of drone deliveries is finally within reach, especially in Italy. L'official announcement was done during the “Amazon Delivering the Future” event in Seattle, and testing will begin by the end of 2024.

The new Amazon drones, called the Mk30, are significantly larger than their predecessors and can carry packages weighing up to 2,26 kilograms. These drones, which operate in the United States, including the states of California and Texas, feature six propellers and can cover a maximum distance of about 12 kilometers.

What you need to know

However, they remain some unknowns, including the launch site of the trials in Italy. The choice of area is crucial, as the Amazon Prime Air service aims to deliver packages within an hour of the request, with the aim of further reducing this time to around 30 minutes in operational mode. Not everyone will be able to benefit from this service, as drones require a safe space to land and a safe trajectory between the distribution center and the delivery point. Amazon will require addresses to be verified as “eligible for delivery,” although details on this process are yet to be worked out.

Furthermore, with the introduction of this technology in Italy, the country's skies will become increasingly crowded. The president of theNational Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), Pierluigi Di Palma, confirmed that the experience acquired in Italy will be a model for the safe implementation of the service in other parts of Europe.

However, this is not the only change expected in Italian skies. In 2025, in Rome, and in 2026, in Milan, they will make their appearance flying taxis, a new way of connecting cities to the main civil airports, as anticipated by the director general of ENAC, Alessio Quaranta. It seems that the future of deliveries and transportation in Italy is about to become significantly more advanced and faster.
