Tomorrow, Thursday 8 May, we celebrate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, a celebration that honours the birth of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Red Cross Movement and the first Nobel Peace Prize winner. On this occasion, Italy lights up in red to pay tribute to the volunteers who, every day, dedicate themselves with commitment and dedication to humanitarian assistance.
Several monuments lit up in red for the Red Cross
Several monuments will be illuminated in red both today, May 7, and tomorrow, May 8. Milan, the RAI antenna in Corso Sempione, Palazzo Lombardia and the Town Hall of the Municipality of Pioltello will be turned on. Not only that: the Municipality of Milan will display the Red Cross flag at Palazzo Marino, with Mayor Giuseppe Sala renewing his closeness to the association and the volunteers. The Municipality of Pioltello displayed the flag outside the town hall for the entire week, from May 2nd to 8th.
A Benevento, the Arch of Trajan will be illuminated in red on the evenings of 7 and 8 May, in conjunction with the celebrations to commemorate the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant.
Other initiatives in Italy
Other Italian cities are participating in the initiative: Alba, the medieval towers of Piazza Risorgimento will light up in red on May 8th; Lucca, some important points of the city will be illuminated in red for the occasion; Cuneo, the civic tower will be illuminated in red, with the Red Cross flag displayed on the Town Hall.
In addition to the lighting of the monuments, numerous initiatives are planned throughout Italy. A Ravenna, the CRI Committee promotes events to celebrate the day and publicize the many activities carried out in the area. Ad Ascoli Piceno, on May 11th an event will be held with the delivery of the Red Cross flag and a simulation of an earthquake emergency in Piazza del Popolo.
World Red Cross Day is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of volunteering and humanitarian assistance. The red lights that will illuminate Italy symbolize the constant commitment of volunteers in bringing comfort, assistance and hope to those in need, embodying the fundamental values of the Red Cross. A symbolic gesture that unites the country in a message of solidarity and gratitude towards those who, every day, work for the common good.
