Alberto Trentini and Mario Burlò, two Italian aid workers, have finally been released after more than a year of detention in Venezuela. The news, greeted with joy and relief by the entire Italian community, was made official by the Italian government thanks to diplomatic efforts and collaboration with Venezuelan authorities.

Trentini, a 46-year-old Venetian, was arrested on November 15, 2024, during a humanitarian mission with the Nobel Peace Prize-winning NGO Humanity and Inclusion. Along with Burlò, a Turin businessman, he spent 423 days in detention without formal charges, facing a difficult and unjust situation with strength and dignity. During the long months of captivity, the two Italians maintained high morale, supporting each other and relying on the support of institutions and their families.

The release was achieved thanks to intense diplomatic efforts by the Foreign Ministry, the Italian Embassy in Caracas, and the cooperation of Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodriguez. Immediately after the release, both Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani publicly expressed their satisfaction and gratitude, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in such sensitive cases. "Their condition is good, their morale is high, and they are understandably relieved that this matter has been resolved. We are extremely satisfied with the outcome." declared Minister Tajani.

For Trentini, detention was also a human test: a history graduate from Ca' Foscari University of Venice, with years of experience in international cooperation in countries such as Peru, Ecuador, Ethiopia, and Nepal, he always chose to put his skills at the service of others. Even during his imprisonment, his thoughts remained with his parents and family, to whom he sent messages full of affection and concern for the little things at home, like getting his car serviced or his cell phone charged, a sign of a deep bond and great humanity.

The release represents not only the end of a personal nightmare, but also a positive sign for all Italians deployed abroad and for their families who have endured months of anguish. The intervention of the institutions and the support of the Italian network abroad have demonstrated the importance of solidarity and the sense of community that unites Italians around the world.
