After the forced stop caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, shows with Theatrical Sightings resume in RicadiThe fifth edition of the festival dedicated to contemporary drama is conceived and directed by the "Avvistamenti" association, with artistic direction by Andrea Paolo Massara. The program will be produced with the support of the Calabria Region, the Municipality of Ricadi, and the private partner Of the Minims of Villa Paola, Tropea. From August 6th to 27th, every Friday and Sunday, the spotlight will be turned back on the evocative Torre Marrana Amphitheater with four performances dedicated to new drama and three collateral events. Thanks to the organizers' tenacity, a rich program offers "spectacular Fridays and surprising Sundays," as the subtitle of the 2021 edition suggests, in the ancient Aragonese watchtower from which the festival takes its name.
Theatrical sightings
Theater Sightings: an edition that challenges the pandemic, at a time of profound uncertainty when a new closure is at risk. The aim is to stage the only summer festival dedicated to theater in the entire province of Vibo Valentia and meet the audience's demand for theatrical performances. "Doing theater this summer is a challenge to fear," comments artistic director Andrea Paolo Massara. Infections are rising, and the rules for the show could change at any moment. We don't know what will happen, but we decided we had to go on stage at all costs.People want a bigger reason to leave their homes.
The sea and aperitifs are no longer enough, there is a hunger for emotions, thoughts, new ideas. We need to feel alive. This year we feel entrusted with a very important task. Theater is no longer just theater, Torre Marrana has become the symbol of the life we miss"The underlying theme of this edition will be family and reunion, with high-profile performances showcasing themes of family relationships, emotions, and intergenerational encounters.
The shows at Torre Marrana
It starts on August 6th with “Supernova” by Mario De Masi and produced by I Pesci. An auteur show in which drama and irony intertwine to tell the story of family as the cycle of an incredible star, unique, unrepeatable, and always ready to explode. Two returns to Torre Marrana, those of two artists appreciated and beloved by the Avvistamenti audience. On August 13th Alessandra Faiella returns with “Il cielo in una pancia”, the new work by Francesca SangalliAn ironic monologue dedicated to those who cannot control their emotions and wonder if it is possible to reconcile instinct and reason. The long-awaited return of “Anthropoaroid” on the occasion of the special for the tenth anniversary.
The award-winning show by and with Tindaro Granata, one of Avvistamenti's most popular works, is the true story of his large Sicilian family, including joys, sorrows, marriages, and migrations. A show of rare beauty—the last chance to see it on stage in Calabria—which launched one of the greatest talents of contemporary theater. The show will be inaugurated by "The Cuntrura” by the Calabrian artist Simone Tudda, a monologue written for a drama workshop held by Granata on his “Antropolaroid,” a highly personal family portrait. The performance program concludes on August 27th. Today. Four-handed getaway for grandmother and child”, winner of In-Box Verde 2021, by and with Annalisa Arione e Dario Eduardo de Falco. The story of two distant generations who hold hands on a moonlit night and begin walking together.
Not just theatre
Sundays in August are filled with surprises: three side events, including guided tours, astronomical observations, and a journey through flavors and knowledge to better understand yourself. On August 8th an archaeologist will lead the participants to discover thearea of the ancient Marrana Tower, a lookout point for territorial control since the 14th century. August 15th will be dedicated to the night sky with "Stellarium." Torre Marrana will be transformed into a real observatory, thanks to the collaboration with the Reggio Calabria Planetarium, a special evening where science and art will come together to tell the magic of the stars.
It will instead be "Cunti Cunzati"to surprise the audience on the evening of August 22nd with a very special dinner. The audience will be seated around a special table, on the stage, while all around them stories will come to life, flavors and memories. The patron of the project is the 'De Minimi of Villa Paola Tropea, new gourmet restaurant with an innovative and strongly cultural imprint.De Minimi promotes and hosts exhibitions and events, financing the most important events in the area.
