The Christmas tree of Gubbio, in Umbria, is the largest in the world. The majestic tree, a silhouette of lights, extends from the slopes of Mount Ingino to the medieval walls of the city. It is 750 meters long and 450 meters wide. Created by the Gubbio "tree growers" (men who offer their voluntary work), it is visible from very far away, thanks to the spectacle offered by the green lights arranged outside it and by the multicolored ones, on its internal.

There are more than 700 of them, distributed over an area of ​​130 thousand square meters. Above it, the comet dominates, measuring 1.000 square metres, designed by 200 lights. This year, all the light points were replaced by LEDs, to complete an energy efficiency process already started in 2020, with the replacement of the star's ceiling lights.

In the 2023 ignition, a message of peace

The tree, lit for the first time 43 years ago, on the evening of the eve of the Immaculate Conception, has now become a traditional event much awaited by the locals, and attracts thousands of visitors every year. It remains lit every day, from 19pm to midnight, and will be visible until January 24, 7.

This year, the testimonial for the lighting was the organization Rondine Citadel of Peace, an association committed for over twenty-five years to reducing armed conflicts in the world and protagonist, just this month, with its message of peace at the UN headquarters. The "tree growers" create this work for free, to celebrate Christmas through this symbol of friendship and brotherhood and out of devotion to Sant'Ubaldo, patron saint of Gubbio, whose sanctuary stands near the summit of Mount Ingino.
