Europe's greenest city is in Italy: a city in Puglia makes the top 20.

A wonderful recognition for Italy and for one of its cities in particular. Thanks to its dedication to green spaces, this recognition has reached the European level.

Italy can boast a record that has so far received little attention, but which deserves attention and pride: it is home to the greenest city in Europe.

The greenest city in Europe is in Italy

The title goes to Savona, in Liguria, which leads the ranking thanks to a forested area covering 83,87% of the municipal territory. This impressive figure, combined with its seaside location, makes this corner of Italy a true natural jewel.

According to the data released from the European Forest Institute and based on findings from the European Environment AgencyThis primacy is not ensured by urban green spaces such as parks or gardens, but by the entire forested area within the city limits. Considering that the entire municipality of Savona covers approximately 60 square kilometers, it's clear that the surrounding hills and valleys contribute significantly to this result.

The other cities

Behind the Ligurian city are two foreign cities: Baia Mare in Romania is in second place, followed by Umeå in Sweden. To find another Italian city in the ranking, you have to scroll down to 14th place, where it appears Bisceglie, in Puglia. A nice recognition for this Apulian town too.

These awards highlight not only the environmental value of the area, but also the attention to the environment that has allowed the creation of true models of balance between nature and urban development. This confirms that Italy, beyond its historical and artistic heritage, can also lead the way in environmental sustainability.
