CNN Travel has released its ranking of the 25 best sandwiches in the world, and Italy has carved out a place of honor for itself with two highly respected representatives.
A good result for Italian cuisine, although we must admit that there are some Italian sandwiches that could have been on the list, such as the porchetta sandwich, the Neapolitan panuozzo, the rosetta with mortadella and many others.
The tramezzino is the only purely Italian street food specialty to make the top 25. Originating in Turin, Venice has made it legendary: the lagoon city has taken this popular bar snack to the next level, stuffing English tea-style white bread triangles with fillings ranging from olives and tuna to mounds of truffle-infused prosciutto. According to CNN, it's best enjoyed by the canal with a glass of local wine.
Italy also makes an appearance on the list through an overseas legacy: the Muffaletta is the iconic sandwich of New Orleans, owed to the Italian immigrants who arrived in the French Quarter between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with their round sesame bread inspired by the Palermo muffuletta.
The list was compiled to help readers plan their next food trip, and includes iconic sandwiches from around the world: Vietnamese Bánh mì, Middle Eastern Shawarma, French Croque monsieur, Japanese Katsu sando, Uruguayan Chivito, and many more.
This recognition confirms how Italian culinary tradition—even as it migrates and transforms—continues to leave its mark on palates around the world.
