Very worrying statement from the Apulian Aqueduct.
Puglia is facing a serious water crisis, with water reserves drastically reduced due to the lack of rain. The Apulian Aqueduct (AQP) warns that, in the absence of significant rainfall, already from January the water availability may not be sufficient to meet demand.
A situation that had never occurred before, given that the main reservoirs are recording a water availability 62% lower than the historical average, while the Irpinia springs show a 12% drop in flow. These are worrying numbers and to deal with this crisis, the Apulian Aqueduct is continuing to reduce the pressure in the water networks, while still respecting the standards set by the Integrated Water Service Charter.
Water crisis: reducing waste
The company has invited citizens to actively contribute by adopting small daily actions to save water, such as reducing waste and installing private storage systems. In the meantime, AQP continues to carry out network redevelopment interventions, with investments of 800 million euros to modernize approximately 1.300 kilometers of pipelines. Thanks to these measures and new technologies such as the Smart Water Management project, it was possible to save 80 million cubic meters of water in 2023 compared to 2009. The company also plans to build a desalination plant on the sources of the Tara River in Taranto by 2026, capable of meeting the needs of 350 thousand people. However, to avoid tightening restrictions, it is essential that everyone adopts responsible consumption.
