The Parma Ham Consortium celebrates its first 60 years. It was 18 April 1963 when 23 producers at the Chamber of Commerce of the ducal city set up the Consortium on a private and voluntary basis and approved its statute. An organism created to better safeguard and enhance theirs typical product: the delicious ham known all over the world.
Prosciutto di Parma
And it was the ducal crown branded on the rind that was identified as a guarantee of authenticity and a symbol of a'unique Italian excellence. A'excellence "the fruit of know-how handed down from generation to generation and of the inseparable bond with a small territory in the province of Parma - underlines a note released by the Consortium – This was the principle that prompted them to found a protection organization, which over time would become an international point of reference in the field of protection of typical products”. “Sixty years later – comments Alessandro Utini, president of the Consortium – in an inevitably changed context, the lucid and far-sighted choice to join forces to defend and promote the uniqueness of the product is confirmed as constantly topical.
It gives us the responsibility to protect the future of the generations that will take up our baton". Among the most significant stages of these 60 years, in 1970 the enactment of the law on the 'Regulations relating to the protection of the designation of origin of Parma Ham', to combat fraud and unfair competition. And in 1978 the public task attributed to the Consortium by the competent Ministries of supervising the observance of the protection regulations. And, again, on 12 June 1996 the registration by the European Union of the protected designation of origin (PDO) 'Prosciutto di Parma'. Denomination whose purpose was the community protection of the product. Currently there are 134 manufacturing companies while there are about a hundred foreign countries to which Parma Ham is exported.
