In view of the next summer season post Covid 19 emergency, the city of Catania it is equipped with new street furniture and carries on the pedestrianization projects with main streets of his Old Town to make it more livable and free from cars. These are changes and interventions that our city desperately needs. Let's take a closer look at these measures.
The first interventions
The first interventions have already been carried out in recent years, starting in 2018. In Via Etnea, close to the Post Office building, at the crossroads of Sangiuliano Street and around both sides of the historic street that borders Stesicoro Square, At traffic hubs and pedestrian areas, planters have been installed to act as barriers. Their purpose is to ensure the safety of the many pedestrians who use the road, as well as from reckless motorists, motorcyclists, and others. These planters are designed to prevent break-ins, to enforce the ZTL (limited traffic zone), and to prevent terrorism.

Other flowerpots with a similar function are located at Piazza Duomo, in the corner between the Vittorio Emanuele Street and Merletta Street; deterrents are also placed at the entrance of Porta Uzeda.
Benches and bollards on Via Crociferi: new street furniture
To enforce thePedestrian area, often invaded in a wild and disrespectful way for the activities and those who live in the urban area on a daily basis, the Municipality of Catania, following the acute complaints of a social media operator, has installed deterrents in the last few days, in thepedestrian area of Via Crociferi. To block the widespread illegal parking of white benches, a deterrent measure for undisciplined motorists.
Placed in Crociferi Street also there standpipe, located at the end of the staircase leading to the baroque street, near the Church of San Camillo dei Mercedari, replaced with a more modern and finally functional system, by Multiservizi, which also repaired another fountain in Piazza Stesicoro.
The new benches on Via Etnea and Largo Paisiello
For years, many citizens of Catania have been asking for the most important and iconic street in Catania, that is Etnea Street, become completely pedestrian. A request that could soon be fulfilled. In the meantime, right on Via Etnea, in front of the main entrance of the Villa Bellini, and not far from two of the city's historic bars, some undulating white benches have been installed, raising mixed reviews. Some appreciate the modernity of these seats, while others see them as inappropriate for the urban context, or even find them uncomfortable.
Benches of the same shape are also found in the Largo PaisielloThe destroyed ones were replaced as part of an overall redevelopment project that would ensure greater decorum and safety. The project is part of a broader plan enhancement and redevelopment of the city.
Street furniture and other desired interventions
It is hoped that there will be an increase in the provision of street furniture. Enhancing street furniture means improving the quality and livability of public spaces. These interventions are all aimed at facilitating the use of spaces and making them increasingly hospitable and welcoming.
