In an extraordinary effort coordinated between the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Joint Defense Joint Forces Operational Command, evacuation plans were put in place to bring home approximately 200 Italians.
Israel-Hamas war, return operation
There are two Italian Boeing Kc767 military aircraft deployed for this rescue mission. The first took off from Pratica di Mare at 23pm. The second, however, was initially located in Kuwait and, after a stopover in Cyprus, reached Ben Gurion airport in Israel. The complex operation was planned and coordinated with great precision by the Joint Defense Joint Forces Operational Command.
THEFarnesina Crisis Unit, in close collaboration with the embassy in Tel Aviv and the Consulate General in Jerusalem, played a key role in organizing and ensuring the success of this evacuation mission. A specially organized desk at Ben Gurion airport operated at full capacity to assist departing Italian citizens.
Statements by the Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani
The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, expressed his satisfaction with the result obtained. The minister stated that around 200 Italians managed to return to Italy on board two military aircraft. Tajani stated that the evacuation operations took place at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and coordinated with the Italian Ministry of Defense.
Yesterday saw the return to Malpensa and Fiumicino of some Italians from Israel, testifying moments of panic and tension experienced while desperately searching for available flights. Initially, many airlines had suspended connections to Israel, but later rescheduled routes to Ben Gurion Airport, which remained operational.
The Italian embassy in Israel reported that it had activated an assistance point for departing compatriots. He also assured that the safety of Italian citizens remains the government's top priority. Other military flights are scheduled today to allow Italians still in Israel to return to their homeland in safe conditions.
