Isola Santa, a place that seems to come out of a fairy tale, is also known as the "Village of the Fairies". Hidden among the green hills of Garfagnana, in Tuscany, it is located in the province of Lucca. It is a true hidden treasure, capable of enchanting visitors with its natural beauty, its history and its mystery.
From the Middle Ages to today
The small village of Isola Santa dates back to the Middle Ages. It rests on the ruins of what was probably an ancient hospice, a stopping place for many travelers and pilgrims crossing the Apuan Alps. Over time, the country has undergone massive structural changes.
In 1948, the construction of a dam to exploit hydroelectric energy led to the submersion of part of the oldest village. Since then, every ten years, with the emptying of the dam, the old buildings that remained under water resurface, such as the Mosceta Mill and the arched bridge that crossed the stream. The place has continued to maintain its charm unchanged and, as if by magic, the fairies who, according to legend, inhabit it, would have whispered secret words to anyone who happened to pass by there.
So it was that the old inhabitants wanted to bring part of that beauty back to life. They did it in 2000, building on the shores of the lake. The hamlet has been transformed into a widespread hotel. Worth visiting is the church of San Jacopo, now deconsecrated, which overlooks the lake.
The legends
The nickname "Borgo delle fairies" derives from the numerous local legends that speak of magical creatures that inhabit the surrounding woods. The inhabitants of Isola Santa tell stories of fairies and nature spirits who help travelers and protect the village from danger. These traditions are an integral part of the local culture and contribute to creating an atmosphere of mystery and wonder.
Naturalistic beauties
Isola Santa is surrounded by uncontaminated nature, which makes it a perfect place for lovers of trekking and outdoor activities. The paths that start from the village pass through chestnut and beech woods, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The lake, with its crystal clear waters, is an ideal place for relaxing walks and family picnics.
Every year, Isola Santa attracts visitors from all over Italy and the world, in search of tranquility and beauty. With its enchantment and charm, Isola Santa is truly a fairy village, where time seems to have stopped and nature reigns supreme. It is an ideal destination for those who want to rediscover the authentic beauty of Tuscany, far from the most crowded tourist places.
