Today is the World Pizza Day, the Italian dish par excellence. Loved and known all over the world, pizza is easily accessible almost all over the world (unfortunately with a lot of misprints), making it a universal food!
As a true universal dish, we can find an infinity of statistics and curiosities about pizza all over the world. It wasn't easy but we chose the five things that impressed us the most, and here's the list:
In which country do you eat the most pizza?
It would seem a question with a foregone answer but it is not so! In fact, in the first place of this special ranking there are the United States, which (thanks to its size) surpasses Italy, stopping at the second step of the podium. Third place is Brazil, which unites a large population with a strong link with Italy, thanks to the many Italian emigrants.
How many pizzas are baked in Italy every day?
As you know, pizza is one of the most sought after meals in all of Italy, excellent for both lunch and dinner. It is estimated that more than 8 million pizzas are consumed every day in Italy! Considering that the population of Italy is about 60 million, it means that every day 13% of Italians eat a pizza. Truly incredible numbers!
What are the most loved pizzas by Italians?
The first place is certainly not a surprise, being occupied by the pizza par excellence, the Margherita. In second place we find Prosciutto e Funghi, and in third the classic Capricciosa. While according to some studies the Diavola (spicy salami) is gaining more and more popularity, settling the second and third in the ranking.
How much was the most expensive pizza in the world paid for?
Before reading on, try to guess a price. Here, we are sure that whatever you have thought is infinitely less than this shocking price. In fact, an American programmer paid 2009 Bitcoins for a pizza in 10.000. Something that at the time might have seemed in favor of the programmer, think, in fact, this pizza chef who sold his product for a coin that does not actually exist. Here, today 10.000 Bitcoins are worth about 370 million Euros! Let's just hope it was a really good pizza ...
Not a small recognition
This last curiosity is perhaps the best known, but we still want to mention it because it makes us Italians very proud: pizza is UNESCO heritage! The inclusion of pizza as a World Heritage Site is a great achievement for Italy, which was looking for the right recognition for a dish so rich in history and loved all over the world.
We hope we have made you discover new interesting things about the most loved Italian dish, now let's enjoy World Pizza Day!
