In 1480, during the Ottoman siegeOtranto fell after a strenuous resistance. The Turks decided to conclude with an evocative act: they led about 800 men to the Colle della Minerva and presented them with an ultimatum: renounce the Christian faith or die. When they refused, they were beheaded, one by one.

The figure of Antonio Primaldo stands out for his incitement to faith, while popular narrative says that "he miraculously remained standing, headless, until the end of the execution“. Women and children were instead enslaved and many atrocities were committed, even inside the Cathedral, which was later desecrated. In memory of those martyrs, the church of Santa Maria dei Martiri was built on the Colle della Minerva, commissioned in the seventeenth century on the ruins of a previous sixteenth-century structure.

The cult of the Holy Martyrs of Otranto

The canonical process began as early as 1539. In 1771, Pope Clement XIV declared them blessed and authorized their cult. In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI concluded the case and confirmed the start of the final proceedings. On May 12, 2013, Pope Francis officially canonized them, in the largest collective canonization in the history of the Church.

The religious and civil celebration

Every year, between August 13th and 15th, Otranto celebrates the Martyrs as co-patrons of the city and the Archdiocese, along with Saint Francis of Paola. This celebration intertwines the sacred and the profane, memory and community, ancient roots and vivid current events. It is an opportunity to reflect on faith, sacrifice and identity, but also a moment of sociality and hospitality for the whole city and its visitors. party The Feast of the Holy Martyrs of Otranto combines historical drama and religious celebration, reflection and collective joy. Through solemn masses, processions, cultural events, and popular performances, the community annually renews its profound connection with those courageous figures of the summer of 1480 and with the unparalleled value of freedom of faith.
